The Art of Sashiko

It has taken a lifetime for me to develop the sensitivity of technique to enable me to innovate this old Japanese craft into art that I can uniquely call my own. Beginning with traditional sashiko in the early 70’s, I have transformed the simple running stitch into a complex expression of my inner artist.

While working on a commission for a client in San Francisco, KQED/PBS filmed me for inclusion in the inspirational arts program Spark which aired in July 2007. This brief video explains a great deal about my background and my creative process.

Above are samples of some of my latest work in paper and cloth.
